Last Day
"What kind of place doesn't let a Ranger bring in his pet." Davros asks Clint who is laying his head on his paws. He looks at Davros then looks away and closes his eyes.
"Whatever, we'll just sleep out here." Davros says and leans back against his backpack.
To his surprise it's actually pretty comfortable and he starts slipping off into a light sleep. He had just started to dream when . . .
"Hey you!" He awakes with a start, feeling pins and needles throughout his body. He looks toward the voice.
"Hey, buddy. You drunk?"
His eyes focus on a man standing next to him. Looking him over, he recognizes the emblems of the city guard on the man's shoulder. He is a large human and he is carrying a torch in his left hand and his right rests on the hilt of a short sword. A pin on the guard's lapel glints off the torchlight and Davros knows that he's higher ranking in the guard. Davros sighs and sits up, stretching. The guard's eyes fall on Davros' signet ring and his face hardens visibly.
"What?" He asks mid yawn.
"You can't sleep here. Get a room or sleep outside of town."
Davros looks at Clint then back at the guard. He thinks about sleeping outside of town. Normally he wouldn't mind, but now with all the goblins being riled up . . .
"Know any inn's that will let my-"
"I don't care about your dog. Get a room, or get out." He says then turns and walks away.
"He's a wolf," Davros says under his breath patting Clint's head. "What a jerk." Clint moves his head back and Davros takes the hint, scratching him behind the ears.
"Well, what do you think?" He asks Clint. The wolf looks up at him then looks away.
"Yeah, that's about it." He says as they start walking around town looking for a room for the night.
Every inn they go to refuses to let him in with Clint citing no vacancies or no animals allowed. Anything, it seems, to keep him from getting a room.
"Screw it," he says leaving the last inn, "If I go to sleep now, I'll miss them when they leave in the morning."
He leans against a wall of the inn for a moment and thinks.
"They're getting horses anyway. I won't be able to keep up if I don't have one, and I can't keep from being seen if I do. They've completed their mission. As far as I'm concerned, so have I." He resolves and heads toward the gate. He is stopped by a guard when he approaches.
"Leaving town? At this hour? At this gate?" The guard says with a raised eyebrow.
"Yeah?" Davros says.
"There is a horde of goblins that chased in some of Helgrym's scum yesterday. They've been more violent since. They may still be out there. Are you sure you want to chance it?"
Davros' hand instinctively covers his signet ring and the guard's eyes flick down at the motion then back up to Davros' face. The guard's face pales slightly.
"I . . ." He starts
"I'll be fine. Let me through."
The guard nods and signals for the inner gate to be opened. Davros steps through and hears the guard curse under his breath. There are more guards watching from the ramparts above and he gets many of the same warnings before being let out of the exterior gate.
Outside now he moves quietly into the underbrush and listens before moving again. Not hearing or seeing anything he motions for Clint to follow quietly, a useless gesture, and makes his way back toward the forest fortress. About halfway there, he spots pinpoints of light in the distance. Upon closer inspection, he realizes it is torchlight. Many torchlights. A ton of torchlights. And holding them are goblins. They seem to have amassed an army, laying in wait for anyone dumb enough to travel on the road at night. As the sun starts to rise, they start to disperse into the trees but none near Davros. He had already moved past and was watching from a distance. He continues his journey with the three, well, four now, on his mind.
Good luck.
